Denise Holden's life is a fragile mix of luck and hard work. A singlemom of a speech-delayed son, Denise makes ends meet by moving to the small townof Edenton, North Carolina, and working the late shift as a waitress. WhenDenise crashes her car and her son Kyle flees the accident and disappears intothe storm, her only stroke of luck is the quick arrival of Taylor McAden, avolunteer fireman. Taylor's got a knack for fixing people, and he can't helpwanting to be involved with Denise beyond the initial rescue of Kyle.As Taylor helps Denise recover from the accident and get to know the town, theydiscover a sweet bond and a magical chemistry that pulls them closer and closer.Though Taylor fits perfectly into Denise's family, he's unable to open his heartto being loved by her. As Taylor struggles to understand his conflictingdesires, Denise questions the wisdom of gambling with Kyle's and her ownemotions.Author Nicholas Sparks has found a loyal audience for his stories about theinternal battles that accompany the arrival of love. His heroes may betruck-driving manly men and his heroines emotional swamis, but it's easy tooverlook the traditional roles when the complexities of human relationships areso beautifully described. Sparks has found his forte, and this novel is sure tobe as popular as his earlier works. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

What Customers Say About The Rescue:

Though it appears Taylor is on the road to recovery, it feels like Denise is rushing into a relationship that could blow up at any moment. Though Denise pulls away after seeing these behaviors, she very quickly takes Taylor back, ultimately marrying and starting a family with him, based on his promise to work on these issues. The message sent is very unhealthy. A disturbing book about a woman, Denise, who falls in love with a man, Taylor, who has serious psychological issues from a dramatic childhood event. These issues reveal themselves in risky behavior, withdrawal and even violence.

Nicholas Sparks never disappoints & it makes you believe that that kind of love is out there & you can be hopeful. I really enjoyed this book.

I have one or two of Sparks' earlier books, but read 'The Rescue' out of order. I could see where this type of story could devolve into 'formula' writing fairly quickly. The story moved fairly predictably toward a logical, if not entireely believable 'happy ending', with another melodramatic detour involving Taylor's best friend and his family.

While it wasn't always riveting, I felt the plot was sufficiently interesting enough to keep me reading. Sparks really didn't need to twanswate(translate) every single line of Kyle's dialogue, but he did, anyway. 'The Rescue' was my first Nicholas Sparks book, so I can't judge it against his other works.

As mentioned elsewhere, the adult characters didn't have very compelling dialogue,or characterizations, either. I'll try them soon and see how they measure up. I give Sparks credit for 'exploring' Kyle's language difficulties, and giving readers some insight into what it might be like for someone like Denise to try to make the best of her circumstances.

The first few chapters were fairly suspenseful, yet once the title 'rescue' is out of the way, the story flattened out a bit.

Thinking to myself; damn that Nicholas Sparks he's done it again sucking me right back into one of the best love stories I've ever read. Denise Holden is a single mother of a handicapped child. Due to a horrific childhood trauma volunteer firefighter Taylor McAden is driven to take disturbing heroic risks while on the job, trying to somehow put his world right. Before she can acknowledge him as her potential life partner though panic takes over as she realizes that her son is no longer in the car and is feared to be lost in the nearby swamp. I first read THE RESCUE in 2002.

There were a couple of moments when I actually gasped out loud, unbelieving as to what I'd just read. THE RESCUE contains some fabulous secondary characters and you will fall in love with every one of them. It's also full of action, suspense and melodrama. All of whom he inevitably leaves as soon as they want more from him then he can give.

It seems that there's just one leap Taylor can't make; that of allowing himself to fall in love. What a treat it was to rediscover this beautiful story. Shutting down emotionally and taking greater and greater risks with the fire department. I won't be giving anything away by telling you that Taylor rescues both Denise and her son and together they forge into a relationship. As fate would have it though a terrible storm hit's the small southern town that night, contriving to bring our couple together. As the storm rages Denise crashes her car and upon regaining consciousness finds herself staring into the handsome face of risk taker extraordinaire Taylor.

As with every Nicholas Sparks' novel we are never guaranteed a HEA which aids in a degree of tension throughout this story. At the moment she's barely scraping by, her son Kyle taking up most of her time, energy and resources.

Taylor is a mystery throughout and the whys of this aren't revealed until the very end. Have some Kleenex handy, this is a great yet as always bittersweet love story.

For me the relationship and its sudden decline is so well written that it seemed a page from my own past, tugging at my heart with its familiarity. As soon as I opened the first page I was lost, reading continuously for the next 24 hours.

But as wonderful as the relationship seems in the beginning it doesn't take long for the cracks to begin to show and the harder Denise tries to help Taylor the more he pulls away. Love is the last thing on Denise's mind as she drives home from her job at the local diner.

He has few friends and all of his past relationships have resulted from rescuing troubled women in one way or another. Due to a lack of finances she has been forced to move back to her mother's hometown and live in the inherited home.

Always being a fan of his work I decided to read all of his books. Denise the single mother with a part time job and taking care of her son.

The love and loss in this book will having you laughing and crying within minutes. The relationship between the three main characters is so realistic.

Great book. Taylor the sad soul who is always trying to prove himself.

Great Read. I have started picking up Nicholas Sparks books again after reading The Notebook and The Wedding several years ago.

I have enjoyed everyone of them and this one was no different.
